One of the most powerful metaphors of continuous metamorphosis, the mermaid is the central motif through which Irina explores a world of complex personal symbols. With a fluid identity, the mermaid appears only in brief flashes, vanishing instantly into the dreams of the water—merging social vulnerability and expressive power as a duality reflective of artistic practice and career, especially for women engaged in sculpture, a field traditionally reserved for men.

In a society that pressures young women to “keep their feet on the ground,” the mermaid speaks of liberation through personal transformation and growth through artistic knowledge. Her irresistible allure over mortals stems from the power her seductive song gives to our own hidden desires—to escape, to find a voice of our own, freed from fear or worry.
