Elena Stanciu

Curator — MARe - Museum of Recent Art

Elena Stanciu is a curator at MARe – Museum of Recent Art, Bucharest. She has an academic background in Philosophy (BA) and Art History (MA). Her master’s thesis approached Chris Marker’s notion of time through a Heideggerian lens, tracing the philosophical understanding temporality as it unfolds in the stillness of La Jetée’s photographs and in the moving images of Sans Soleil. Her broader research and curatorial interests revolve around memory, time, and the power of images to shape our understanding of reality. She is particularly attentive to the ways traces of the past persist in everyday life, and to how former interpretations of history shift and transform under the contemporary gaze. Continuously searching for these subtle negotiations between past and present, she approaches exhibitions as spaces of inquiry and recontextualization. She has worked in diverse cultural contexts, from independent initiatives to collaborations with established cultural institutions.
